Guide to keeping Bearded Dragons

Description

Bearded Dragons or Pogona vitticeps are lizards that come from Australia ,they live in arid, rocky desert regions, they are brilliant climbers spending most of their time on branches and bushes they love to bask on rocks and exposed branches in the early morning and afternoon sun to get their body temperature up ,they are often black in colour when absorbing heat, they have spiny scales which can be expanded and blown up when they feel threatened they also show various gestures such as head bobbing to show dominance and arm waving to show submission this sometimes equates to its usually males that head bob and females wave although this can be for either sex.

They are usually old enough to breed by around 9 months for a male although females need to be older usually around 1 year plus they are egg layers in the wild ,they breed in spring they will dig a hole in sand to lay their eggs in after about 6 weeks gestation they can have up to 30 eggs these take between 60-80 days to hatch the parents have no interaction with the eggs after they are laid.

They make brilliant pets getting to around 20-inches long and live for up to 12 years in captivity , they rarely bite and usually are very friendly and calm so can make good pets for children , most reptiles tend to not care who looks after them but Beardies do tend to be able to tell their owner over strangers and routines their owners have.

They eat greens and insects every day with babies preferring live food they do not need hardly any water as they are desert animals so need hardly any humidity in their environment

EQUIPMENT NEEDED FOR A BEARDED DRAGON SET -UP

  • 4 ft x 18 x18 vivarium minimum this is due to the heat gradient needed they need a very warm basking area of around 105-110 f so they need the 4 ft length to get cold area temperature
  • Light bulb for basking under this needs to always be white to resemble the sun
  • dimming thermostat , this controls the light bulb this is essential as without a thermostat you cannot keep the temperature constant it will either be too hot or not hot enough
  • U.light and light starter , Beardie need a 10% u.v this is like sunshine without a u.v reptiles cannot process calcium as it is the u.v that gives them vitamin d3 this is needed to absorb calcium in the body these bulbs have to be replaced every 9 months whether working or not as the strength of the u.v (10%) decreases after this time
  • Thermometer, to check temperatures
  • Substrate, babies cannot have sand in case they eat it we use bran a digestable substance that is safe for all ages sand is ok for dragons over 6 months old
  • Decoration , branches, rocks its up to you
  • Calcium powder , Nutrabol vitamin powder
